Installing a wysiwyg editor is a convoluted process with numerous obstacles. Here is my step-by-step procedure for Drupal 6 and for Drupal 7.

Please note that pages and other content created with before these changes will not show an editor. You need to change the input format, under the body section in your node, to FULL HTML.

Good point. Only forms for new nodes will show up with a wysiwyg editor. This is because older nodes will have probably been created with Filtered HTML.
